The genetics behind GTD - Geoffrey Maher

This presentation will describe the genetic constitution of molar pregnancies and how genetic and other related tests can inform the diagnosis of abnormal products of conception. It will outline how genetic testing, namely short tandem repeating (STR) genotyping, is informative for the diagnosis and management of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.

Molar pregnancy - Sophie Stenton
This talk will cover the key morphological features required for diagnosis of molar gestations. Common pitfalls and mimics such as villous dysmorphism and placental mesenchymal dysplasia shall also be discussed.

  • Geoffrey Maher PhD

    Geoffrey Maher is the lead geneticist for England’s gestational trophoblastic disease service, based at Charing Cross Hospital, London.

  • Dr Sophie Stenton

    Dr Sophie Stenton completed her training in Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery in 2019. She is currently Consultant Paediatric and Perinatal Pathologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and is one half of the reporting team for the supraregional Gestational Trophoblast Disease service. Dr Stenton is the National Paediatric Histopathology EQA Scheme organiser and is the Education Secretary for the British and Irish Paediatric Pathology Association (BRIPPA). Dr Stenton undertakes paediatric coronial post-mortem work and has a special interest in stillbirth, placental disease, and early neonatal death.
